Here's an old Hohner acoustic guitar I recently restored. The guitar was in a pretty bad condition when I got it. The open type tuning keys were broken, the fretboard was covered in dust and rust, the action was too high and the neck had turned into a bow!
The first thing I did was to remove the old rusty strings and clean up the guitar. Then I cleaned the fretboard thoroughly and polished the frets.
As for the hardware, I installed a new set of adjustable semi closed type tuners and modified the bridge saddle. The bridge saddle was too high and so was the action of the guitar. Therefore, I sanded down the base of the bone saddle and made it 1-2mm lower. Tip: when you want to make the height of a nut or saddle lower, always sand down evenly the base/bottom and not the upper slotted surface.
Then I put new light strings on it, adjusted the neck and set up the guitar for a nice medium action. The guitar was finally polished and it was ready to play again!
