Laney VH100R repair

Here 's a nice Laney VH100R tube head that came in. Though it's a nice sounding high gain amp, it hums a lot! That's the main problem of this British rock monster.
The hum is quite loud and it gets louder on the overdrive channels. So what's causing all this hum?
It's the A.C. power supply of the tube filaments... Laney didn't bother putting a d.c. filament supply or just a hum balance pot like fender usually does. At least, they tried to reduce hum by supplying the first 12AX7 (labelled V1) with dc voltage, but that didn't solve the problem.
So I decided to put a simple hum balance pot circuit inside the amp plus an EMI filter and it worked! The hum is almost eliminated!  The EMI filter's role is to reduce the noise coming from the 50/60Hz power grid (which is then fed to the valves). The hum balance pot creates a zero voltage(Earth) reference for the filament supply. The hum balance pot has to be rated for at least 2W of power and the Center tap of the filament supply has to be removed! The 5A fuse for the filament supply can simply be removed in this case.

Here is the original Laney Vh100R schematic:

  1. This looks promising. It's 100 ohm, not 100Kohm, right? And forgive my ignorance, but if a 2 W pot will do, then a 5 W will be equally useful, or am I thinking about this the wrong way?

    1. Hello!
Yes, it's a 100 Ohms potentiometer! (NOT a 100K). You could use a 5W pot instead of a 2W one. Lower wattage pots (e.g. 1/4W) could be overheating. The >= 2W ones will have no problem. Just be really careful when working inside a tube amp due to the high voltages stored in power capacitors.

  2. Hey Tanos,
    very interesting!
Where did you find the EMI POWER FILTER and the 2W pot ? Are you from EU?
    Thanks

    1. Hello Carlos!
Thank you for reading my blog!
Yes, I from the EU and I found these parts at a local electronic-components store. You can spot them on eBay as well. A common source for EMI filters are the old ATX PSUs taken from older PCs. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Power-EMI-Filter-HA25L-6A-50-60Hz-AC-250V-6A-Power-Line-Filter-/331690350092?hash=item4d3a49160c:g:ziUAAOSwd0BVyHaK
