Here's another guitar project I finished for a friend of mine. It's based on a 90's Hohner HRG series electric guitar. The project started when I was given a few parts of this guitar: its 24 fret neck, the body and the pickguard. The rest of the parts were missing so I had to restore the guitar based on what I had and what I could find on the market.
The neck was in a very good condition with almost no signs of fret wear or any damage. The body however, had quite a few marks, dents and signs of abuse.
The old Wilkinson 2 point tremolo of this Hohner guitar was not available and the owner didn't want to spend a lot on this project. So we decided to fit a new 6-point fender style tremolo on the guitar. The old stud holes had to be covered but I wanted to restore and refinish the body anyway so that was not so much extra work for me.
The guitar body:
The body was sanded down and its old clear coat was removed. I didn't remove the paint and sealer, just the clear lacquer coats of the old finish. Next, I used wood filler to cover all the dents, marks and the old tremolo stud holes. Once the filler was sanded and smoothed out, it was time to repaint the guitar body. The old colour was glossy black and we decided to go for a satin black finish this time. Satin black is a finish also known as "goth" or "pitch black" finish for guitars and it's quite popular for cars thanks to the Fast and Furious movies.
The neck:
Once the body was painted, it was high time to start working on the guitar neck. The neck was okay but I refinished the back of it in satin clear to get a "faster" and smoother feel. The new closed type tuners and a set of roller type Fender string trees were bolted on the headstock. Moreover, a new graphite nut was installed for better tuning stability.
Hardware & Electronics:
The new black 6 point tremolo was placed on the body and the plastic pickguard was reshaped. The electronics used for the guitar were fender pots and pickup selector, a red "killswitch" button and two emg style closed ceramic pickups that are quite hot, rated at 12Kohms(dc resistance).
The finale:
The guitar was set up right with a set of 0,009" coated strings that last way more than regular strings. After years of just sitting in the attic, this Hohner's ready to play again! The action is low and the intonation just right! Another shredding machine is out there now! Check it out:
Cheers, Thanos
