These limited edition guitars were released 11 years ago and were famous for the red details on their dark finish plus their red and black zebra pickup bobbins.
A few weeks ago I spotted a pair of ceramic humbuckers on ebay. These pickups are made by a brand called "HMV"and they come with red and black bobbins. I thought it would be nice to replace the stock pickups on a pitch black Epiphone gothic studio LP with these zebra ones and make it look a bit like the old Gibson voodoo LP. I had changed the pickup rings with metallic ones in the past but the stock pickups were no really that good. The AlNiCo pickups of this goth LP were a bit muddy sounding and they lacked in sustain anyway.
So I changed the pickups with these HMV ones and the sound was immediately improved! Now I get lots of sustain on bends and single notes without losing clarity when playing tricky chords. Also, the all black finish matches the red bobbins. I also replaced the black speed knobs with red ones to get more red details on this goth lp.
This epi LP is a value for money guitar with a lightweight body plus a very fast and quite playable neck. The downside is the stock Epi electronics such as the "hot ch" pickups and its cr@ppy 3-way selector...
