In 2013, Washburn is celebrating its 130th anniversary with a new limited series of guitar models. The specs on these guitars are pretty high but the price tag is kept low. This single-cut acoustic guitar came in for a modification and a setup.
Mod:
The guitar had a medium action at first but the frets were in a pretty good shape and the neck relief was just right. Therefore, we decided to sand down the bone saddle of the bridge to lower the action a bit. I used a dremmel sanding tool to sand down the bottom of the compensated saddle.
Precision is key when lowering the action of a compensated saddle. The saddle should have an ultra smooth and even bottom surface in order to retain the acoustic character and intonation of the instrument.
The crystal pickup hidden under the saddle is also going to be affected by the new bottom surface and that's an extra reason why you shouldn't go crazy with this mod.
Setup:
Once the saddle was ready, I placed it back on the bridge. I then polished the frets, cleaned and lubricated the fretboard and placed some nut sauce on the bone nut. Then, I tightened up the tuners a bit and set the guitar up using a set of fresh acoustic 0,011" gauge strings.
The guitar sounds big and the tone is just awesome. It's also much more comfortable to play thanks to the new saddle height!
Here are a few pictures of the guitar:
