Here's a new guitar restoration project. This guitar was probably made in Korea or Japan during the late 60's or early 70's. It has no logo on it so we couldn't find any factory info. All we know is that it was bought new from Athens, Greece during that period and that it had a classic sunburst finish.
Here's the Greek store it once sold these: http://www.armaosmusic.gr
The guitar was in a bad shape when it came in and it was covered in dust. The frets were worn out and there were dead spots all over the fretboard. I managed to perform a fret leveling and polishing. I also cleaned and reconditioned the fretboard with lemon oil. The tuners were not rusty as they were probably changed a few years back with the right-side tuners of 12-string acoustic guitar... Not a perfect job but it works okay. I just had to lubricate the tuners.
The nut was also replaced for Les Paul style bone nut.
The bridge is a roller-type one and the guitar is fitted with a bigsby style tremolo. I had to lubricate these ones as well but they work just fine.
The electronics on the other hand were a mess. I removed the plastic tortoise pickguard and found dust and wooden particles under it. Unfortunately, the body is made out of thick plywood but it's pretty durable and a bit heavy.
I re-soldered most of the electronics and cleaned the pots and switches with some oil-free contact cleaner spray. All four single-coil pickups work again and there are many tone combinations despite the fact that the the pickup output is really weak. There's an On/Off switch for every pickup, a passive "cut/boost" switch which is connected to a resistor, a master volume and a master tone control. The sound is clean and well defined but this is no hard rocking guitar.
Once the electronics and hardware were in order, I set the guitar up with a fresh set of coated 9-42 strings. The guitar sounds and plays better than even before. We think it's more playable now than when it left the factory a few decades ago...
